pakistanSafaris proudly organized a 14-member delegation of senior Buddhist monks from Sri Lanka, in collaboration with Prime Minister Imran Khan and the High Commission of Pakistan in Colombo, with the aim of promoting Buddhist religious tourism in Pakistan.
Pakistan is the cradle of ancient Buddhist civilization, home to some of the world’s most sacred relics, monasteries, and archaeological treasures. Iconic sites such as the Fasting Buddha, Julian Monastery, Takht-e-Bahi, Taxila City, Shingardar Stupa, and Dharmarajika Stupa make Pakistan a spiritual destination for Buddhist pilgrims and history enthusiasts from across the globe.
The delegation’s journey began in Lahore, the country’s vibrant cultural capital and Pakistan’s second-largest city. Known as “The Heart of Pakistan,” Lahore offers a blend of ancient charm and modern energy. Its historic walled city, Mughal-era monuments, lush gardens, spiritual Sufi shrines, and world-famous culinary scene create a captivating experience for every visitor. As a key city along the historic Grand Trunk Road, Lahore has witnessed centuries of invasions, trade, and cultural evolution—earning its title “The City of Gardens.”
Continuing onward, the tour moved to Swat Valley, often described as the “Switzerland of the East.” Swat is one of Pakistan’s most stunning destinations, filled with alpine forests, serene rivers, and exceptional remains of the ancient Gandharan Buddhist civilization. Its landscape is dotted with numerous Buddhist stupas, monasteries, and archaeological wonders.
On the route from Islamabad, the group visited Taxila, one of Asia’s most significant archaeological treasures, dating back to the Mesolithic era. The region once served as a major center of learning and spirituality in the Buddhist world.
Among all Gandharan monasteries, Takht-e-Bahi stands out as the most impressive, best-preserved, and visually striking. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a rare glimpse into Buddhist monastic life, perched high on a ridge along the historic Peshawar–Swat road.
Through this initiative, ZoonSafari reinforces its commitment to showcasing Pakistan’s unmatched heritage, welcoming pilgrims, historians, and travelers to explore the rich spiritual and cultural landscapes of this extraordinary country.
